How do I install a floor safe in concrete, step by step?

1. Test first. Before casting, check the safe opens and closes correctly and set your personal code — you cannot change it once the safe is cast in.

2. Protect the safe. Seal the external sheet-metal joints with permanently-elastic silicone, and on electronic models tape over the keypad and battery area so no moisture gets in during pouring. Allow the silicone to cure (around 24 hours) before installation.

3. Prepare the hole. Make the floor recess at least 100 mm larger than the safe on every side, with at least 100 mm of space at the base. Leave the walls rough and uneven so the concrete keys in and anchors firmly.

4. Position and level. Set the safe on small metal spacers or profiles (at least 100 mm high) so concrete can flow underneath. Position it, check it is level with a spirit level, and brace the walls so they cannot bow inward while you pour.

5. Close and cover. Keep the door closed and cover the door, frame and gap so concrete and debris stay out.

6. Pour the concrete. Fill in layers around and under the safe, compacting as you go to remove air pockets, up to the top edge of the door frame. Do not fill the raised shaft or collar on top — that space is for the floor build-up (screed, insulation, floor covering).

7. Cure, then finish. Leave the door closed while the concrete cures, then open it, wipe out any moisture and let the safe dry. Curing times vary by model, so follow the time stated in your safe's manual before relying on it.

Important: the safe must stay encased in at least 100 mm of concrete all round. This is required by EN 1143-1 and to keep your insurance valid.
