How much space does a safe door need to open?

Before you place your safe in a niche, a cupboard or next to a wall, check which side the hinges are on (see Door Hinges in the specifications) and which type of hinges the safe has (see Door - Angle and Hinges).

Internal hinges are hidden when the door is closed. As the door opens, its edge on the hinge side swings a little past the side of the safe. Leave at least 20 mm free between the safe and any wall on the hinge side. Otherwise the door rubs against the wall or can't open.

External hinges are visible on the outside of the safe. The door turns around the hinge and doesn't swing past the side, so the door itself needs no extra space.

The handle: with both hinge types, the handle and lock stick out from the front of the door (see Lock depth). If a wall is directly next to the hinge side, or the safe sits back in a niche, the handle hits the wall before the door reaches 90°. Place the front of the safe level with the front of the niche, or leave more space on the hinge side.

More than 90°: some safes must open further than 90° before you can pull out shelves, drawers or rifles. Door - Angle and Hinges in the specifications shows how far the door opens.

Building a niche? Build it after the safe is delivered, to its real dimensions. Not sure it fits? Send us the measurements of the space and we'll check.
