Water Extinguishers
Water fire extinguishers are the most effective and widely used option for Class A fires involving solid combustible materials such as wood, paper, cardboard, textiles, and plastics. Water works by cooling the burning material below its ignition temperature, removing the heat element of the fire triangle and preventing re-ignition once the fire is extinguished. This makes water extinguishers the standard and most cost-effective choice for the most common fire risk found in the majority of buildings.
Water extinguishers are the correct primary choice for offices, schools, libraries, hotels, residential buildings, retail premises, and any environment where paper, wood, and fabric are the dominant combustible materials. They are available in spray and jet nozzle configurations — water spray models disperse the water more broadly and are generally preferred for indoor use on Class A fires, while jet models provide a more directed stream for larger outbreaks at greater range.
All Safegear water extinguishers are EN 3 certified and available in sizes from 3 litres to 9 litres to match different room sizes and risk levels. It is critical to note that water extinguishers must never be used on live electrical fires or on Class B flammable liquid fires — in environments where these risks are also present, a CO2 or foam extinguisher should be available alongside the water unit. Correct extinguisher selection for mixed-risk environments should always be based on a formal fire risk assessment.
