Powder Fire Extinguisher

Powder fire extinguishers offer the broadest fire class coverage of any extinguisher type, making them one of the most versatile options for mixed-risk environments. Dry powder is effective against Class A fires (solid combustibles such as wood and paper), Class B fires (flammable liquids such as petrol, paint, and solvents), and Class C fires (flammable gases such as propane and butane). The powder agent works by chemically interrupting the combustion chain reaction, rapidly knocking down flames across all three classes.

Powder extinguishers are the standard choice for vehicles, garages, workshops, plant rooms, construction sites, agricultural buildings, and industrial facilities where multiple fire classes may be present simultaneously and a single versatile extinguisher type is preferred. They are also widely used as general-purpose extinguishers in environments without specific electrical or liquid fuel risks that would require a dedicated CO2 or foam unit.

There are important practical limitations to consider: dry powder leaves a significant residue after discharge that can be difficult to clean and may damage sensitive equipment, documents, and electronics. Powder extinguishers are therefore not recommended for use in server rooms, offices with IT equipment, or enclosed spaces where the powder cloud would reduce visibility and potentially cause respiratory discomfort.
